When you are browsing on a cellular network like EE, Vodafone, or Three, you may experience an SSL protocol mismatch error.
Carrier Content Filtering & Age Verification
The Cause: Most UK mobile operators enforce a strict, network-level adult content filter by default on 5G and 4G data.
Why it breaks SSL: Instead of serving a normal "Blocked" page, the carrier tries to intercept the secure HTTPS connection to redirect you to an age-verification portal. Your browser recognizes this interception as a security breach and throws the
ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCHor an invalid response error. The Fix: You must log into your UK mobile carrier account (via their app or website) and turn off the content lock or age restriction filter.
How to Disable Adult Content Filtering
To disable adult content filtering (Content Lock) on your cellular account, you need to verify your age, as network operators are legally required to restrict 18+ content. You can do this quickly by logging into your account or calling their support line.
The most common ways to remove the Content Lock include:
Online Account: Log in to your account online, navigate to your parental controls or content settings, and switch the Content Lock to "Off". This may require a valid credit card (for age verification) where a nominal, immediately refunded fee is charged.
Phone Call: Call your cellular data provider and speak directly with a customer service representative, who can remove the lock after performing an age check.
In-Store: Visit with a valid photo ID like a passport or driver's license.
Note: After making the changes, be sure to turn airplane mode on and off, or restart your phone, to apply the new network settings.
